ECTC DRAFT TEST METHOD #5

Determination the Biodegradability of Rolled Erosion Control Products (RECPs) by CO2 Release

This test evaluates the biodegradation of RECPs by measuring the release of carbon dioxide from the organic material used in the tested RECP. This method monitors only bacterial and fungal activities on the plant materials. Total carbon content of samples of the tested RECP is determined via a gravimetric method. Prepared specimens are then exposed to inoculum causing biodegradation and associated CO2 generation to take place. Flasks containing RECP and inoculum are monitored periodically for CO2 generation and compared to the theoretical total carbon content. A typical series of flasks is shown above. Percent degradation has been used to project the material's half-life, which is sometimes referred to as the material's functional longevity.
